Hay Park
05Feb06

It was a warm welcome for 44 competitors in the South West Orienteering Trekkers’ first park and street event for the summer series.

Course setter, Cody Whitfield, scattered 17 control locations in the Hay Park area. Competitors had the choice of three courses: Runners going for the long course have to cover 15 controls. The short course has 10 controls while the walkers’ course provides a leisurely 5 controls. The challenge was to find the self-selected control locations without losing one’s way from misreading the map.

Regulars like Robyn Phillips with little Liam in stroller blitzed the walkers’ group. Veteran orienteer, Jill Elderfield, might have moved a little faster with the help of one of her dogs, Banjo. We also had the pleasure of the company of two Swedish orienteers, Inga and Joe Overgaard. There were many new faces who showed enthusiasm and determination to complete their chosen route.

Starter Peter Elderfield did a commendable job sending out runners and walkers at regular intervals. Administrator Kendal Sutherland and her assistant had lots of Maths practice in calculating the time taken by the participants.

In the final countdown, Steve Sutherland took top position in the long course with young Jeremy Cheang moving to first spot in the short course.

Mangles
12Feb06

The warmer temperature in this second event of SWOT summer series at Mangles was the cause of many red-faced and sweat-soaked competitors.

A fit Cody Whitfield returned to the long course with little competition in the male dominated field. Fifteen-year-old Patrick Crockford displayed admirable efforts in completing his 15-control route with his persistence and determination.

Jeremy Cheang continued his winning form in the short course. His dad, Mun, surprised many by occupying the second spot. Val Mason with Cheryl and Annette Wilson demonstrated the effectiveness of group collaboration. Sam Cochrane ran solo in his first orienteering event and retained his enthusiasm in the gruelling heat.

The event also brought on the “participation” of a curious on-looker. After observing competitors running past her house and turning into the lane next to it, she called out to redirect competitor Soo Cheang when she missed her turn!

15 Controls Cody Whitfield 48.00; Ben Halligan 54.00; Steve Sutherland 61.25; Cliff Phillips 64.25; Simon Carlin 65.20; Ian Seymour 66.20; Patrick Crockford 92.50.

Big Swamp
19Feb06

Orienteers do provide light entertainment on a Sunday afternoon – the speedsters climb over fences for a shortcut to a control location; misguided ones walk to and fro quickly and frequently in one location in search of a control marker; partners would hover over a piece of paper (map) and point out to a location like a surveyor before proceeding.

The third South West Orienteering Trekkers’ park and street event in Big Swamp offered both flat and steep terrains to move on. The course also highlighted the importance of careful marking of control locations at the start. Misinterpretations of control locations could chew off many precious minutes for the serious competitors.

Allan Whitfield’s successful come-back to the summer series sent a challenge to the long course participants to stay in form.

Youngest competitor in the short course, eleven-year-old Brendan Canzirri, ran brilliantly and whizzed past the contingent of older and many experienced orienteers to clinch first place. Matthew Simmons and Brent Dorsett-Lynn joined the growing number of young and enthusiastic orienteers in the short course.

The Barrett family returned to orienteering with 6-year-old Jackson and 3-year-old Will learning the ropes from dad, Craig, in the walkers’ course. Mum, Leigh, took the short course for a more brisk pace.

Dalyellup
26Feb06

South West Orienteering Trekkers’ fourth park and street event in the summer series was held at Dalyellup.

Part-time orienteer, Ben Halligan, ran effortlessly to oust Allan Whitfield from his top spot in the long course. Rebecca White, the only female in this course, had been impressive with her consistency since the start of the series.

Annette Wilson, a superb runner, came in a close second to Jeremy Cheang in the short course. Jill Elderfield had the company of her two dogs, Banjo and Clancy, who might have set their own running course. It had not improved her time.

The family trio of Klynt, Jenny and Shelby Nobbs displayed focus and enthusiasm. Sam Cochrane introduced his father, David, and his sisters, Amber and Sophie, to orienteering. They breezed through their chosen courses.

New members, Anita Turner and June May, had opted to walk leisurely and appreciate the picturesque setting in this event.
