Close finish at first Nav Dash

The first Nav Dash sprint orienteering event for 2010 at Mt Lawley produced a close result, with the four favourites all finishing in under 16 minutes. Sten Claessens continued his excellent Metro Series form with a good start, winning the first 5 legs to take a 10 second lead. Steve Fletcher was close behind, and gained over the next two legs to hit the lead, but then went too wide at 8, losing 20 seconds. Despite winning a majority of legs over the remainder of the course, Steve could only pull back 10 seconds on Sten’s advantage. Oscar McNulty and Craig Dufty were never more than a few seconds back on any leg, but just not fast enough to challenge seriously. Sten the winner in 15:12, Steve 15:22, Oscar 15:49 in 3rd and Craig 15:59.
Rachel West had an easier time in the Women’s race, gaining steadily over Sarah Dunnage throughout the course to take the win by over a minute in 17:07 – less than 2 minutes behind Sten Claessens. Jen Graham-Taylor and Erin Post tied for 3rd place, a minute behind Sarah.

ECU Mt Lawley wrap

The first NavDash for the series has been run and won. Congratulations to Sten Claessens and Rachel West on the long course and to Tony Simpkins and Carol Brownlie on the short(er) course. Full results are available http://results.orienteering.asn.au/index.php?sd=1268524800&pg=results&ca=2&ev=706
The day turned out fine, albeit very muggy, and saw over 100 people dashing, darting and racing their way around the buildings, carparks and trees of the campus.
Courses set by Ricky Thackray were well received and everyone had a good time. Thanks to all for attending. Next week's event (20 March) is being set at UWA by LOST stalwart, Richard Matthews.
