Setters Report
The Gungin event was the first to be set and organised by
novice setters Tony Quinn and Guy Harvey. Invaluable support was provided by
orienteering masters Ken Post, Duncan Sullivan and John Toomey. Ken provided
quality control for the course design and offered advice on event organisation.
John, the custodian of the Gungin map, updated the map prior to the event while
Duncan negotiated
land access, provided advice and brought the port-a-loo.
The design and preparation for the day was remarkably smooth
given the inexperience of the setters. Knowledge of the area was a great help.
Using Corpse software was a challenge, but trial and error proved a good
substitute for logic. The secret to success for novice setters is leaving
plenty of time for planning and preparation, coupled with support from the
experienced when required. The maps were saved and printed as *pdf files which
proved to be easier than saving in *eps format, although perhaps not as good
quality.
The day ran smoothly, with favourable comments on the
courses being gratefully received by the novice setters. The new start location
on Bahen Road
added interest to the course and thanks to the owners for allowing use of the
land. A relatively low turn out is thought to be a reflection of the inclement weather
forecast and competing events in Dubbo and the Blackwood. A number of virgin
MTBO’ers enjoyed their first event. Thanks to Bill Darby for assistance with
collection of controls.
