CALM and WA Water Corporation Land
- Updated 7 March 2003. TS
Access to CALM land in the Perth Hills
area* for recreation is controlled through the Mundaring CALM office.
Current contact is Jamie Ridley. Use of land is restricted because of
fire control, forestry activity, conservation considerations and
conflict with other users. OAWA is generally restricted to 15 events
per season. A 2 day weekend event counts as just 1 event. An event
using any CALM land counts as an event even if the assembly area is
outside CALM land. Schools Championships and National Championships
are generally not counted as part of the OAWA 15 events.
Approval for events is usually sought
via a draft schedule submitted to CALM in early November and a
meeting with Jamie and CALM fire officers in mid November. The final
burn programme is not settled until well into summer so the November
approval may not be final. 2003 approvals were arranged via e-mail
and meetings with Jamie. A CALM form - Application/Permission to
Conduct Organised Non-Commercial Education and Leisure Activities
is required to be completed for each event.
* Includes North to Julimar, South to
Dwellingup. Access to CALM land in the Narrogin (Dryandra) and Collie
areas is controlled by those district offices, not through Mundaring.
However, the Mundaring Office can assist with the permission process
and help us avoid fees and application processes designed for
commercial recreation operators.
The CALM contact is: Mr J Ridley

The Water Corporation also has
an interest in some CALM managed land. Each year an agreement for use
of Water Corporation land has to be negotiated and signed. A copy of
the agreement is in the OAWA technical web pages. CALM forward copies
of applications for relevant events to WAWC. Generally any OAWA event
that CALM has approved will be approved by WAWC, but some
restrictions may be applied by WAWC, eg which assembly points can be
used, whether toilets are required, etc.

SETTLER'S COMMON Updated. 10 February
2002. RH
No event scheduled
for 2003.
Landholder
Area
is under the jurisdiction of the City of Armadale (9399 0111) and
administered by the Settlers Common Advisory Committee.
Requests for use to go to the Manager
of Parks and Gardens, Locked Bag No 2, Armadale 6992. Advisory
Committee contact is Brett Tizard, 9497 4038 mobile 0417 971 756, 45
Dawson Rd, Armadale 6112.
Use the car parks
near Armadale Primary School as an assembly area, because this gives
plenty of parking space and access to toilets. Toilets are situated
about 150m W of the car park, in the park downstream from the car
parks (across Carradine Rd).
You are advised to contact the school
as a common courtesy, but also one of the car parks is likely to be
locked if you don't arrange otherwise
The area around the Field Studies
Centre is out of bounds for competition, and courses should not
induce runners to cross this area (bounded by the creek [N], fences
[E and W] and fence+road [S]). However, the FSC can be hired to use
as an event centre. It has toilets, open hall, parking for about 20
cars. If you want to use it, contact the Settlers Common Committee
for bookings and pay fee.
Problems with
controls lost or damaged. Leave controls near houses and major tracks
till last - Sun morning. Wise do a check before event starts.

Landholder
Area

Public toilets and
BBQ's are available at Farrell Grove and South Ledge picnic areas. It
may be useful to advise members in the newsletter to bring their own
wood.
Parking is limited
in both area but is better at Farrell Grove.
MAP
There are
2 rare flora exclusion zones in the valley running north from The
Dell picnic area, see map for details. These must be marked

SPICE BROOK Updated. 10 February 2002.

WALYUNGA (WADJUG RIDGE) Updated. 10
February 2002. RH
No event scheduled for 2003
Landholder
Area is controlled
by CALM as a National Park.
Event scheduling
should ensure that the Park Ranger or District Manager (John Lloyd)
is notified, just dealing with CALM Mundaring is not adequate.
Ranger's office
(Steve Strachan) is north of road between two car parks. Tel No: 9571
1371
In 1998 the ranger
requested that in future events not be scheduled for Mothers Day or
any other busy weekend. In later discussions between Phil Dufty and
the ranger, Steve, it was agreed that it may be possible to run
introductory events (ie low number) from the car parks. The shop
would not be allowed at the car parks.
Courses are not to
go through aboriginal site as marked on map.
If the assembly
area is in the park, then cars will be charged at gate. It is
advisable to warn members by newsletter of cost per car in
newsletter. However, see note below about possible off park assembly
to the north.
Facilities
Park facilities
are generally not available for orienteering events because of
crowding. After the event members may move to the park facilities.
Park fees are payable, but discounts can sometimes be negotiated.
Wood BBQ's -
remind members by newsletter to take wood.
Permission for
1999 Event
Don Young has been
negotiating with the owners of the property to the north of the map
for access. Informally this has been agreed but a formal approval and
access details had not been concluded at 4.2.99. Check with the
Technical Convenor or Don Young for the latest status of this
negotiation before commencing planning.
Update 16 March 1999. Access via Jock
Clough's property has been formally approved. However, park fees may
still apply.

Landholder
The Park is the
responsibility State Ministry of Planning. Contact is Kevin Uhe on
9264 7777 at Albert Facey House, 469 Wellington Street, Perth 6000.
All bookings can
be done through the Tourism and Marketing Coordinator, Ross Parker,
9249 2446. There are no longer any entry fees to the Park.
There is
considerable redevelopment occurring at the Village, and Ross Parker
has advised that Mussel Pool is the best location for events.
Facilities
Toilets and
shelters at Mussel Pool.
The Park may now
be accessed from Lord St to the East and Beechboro Rd North from the
West.
MAP
A 1:5000
map of the Mussel Pool area was drawn by Craig Dufty for the 2002
event, where colour photocopies were used. This map is ideal for the
shorter courses, although needs to be updated to include the new
entry road. For this year, a larger area is available, using land
both to the East and West of Craigs map, which could be used for
longer courses. Tony Simpkins is fieldworking this area for a
permanent course, which may be launched at the 8 June event.
