Orienteer of the Year Scheme - Rules
(Revised for 2008)
The Orienteer of the Year (OY) Scheme is a competition running throughout the season, designed to permit comparison of performance between orienteers of different age classes, and to select winners in the following categories:
- Senior Men (M-16 to 80-)
- Senior Women (W-16 to 75-)
- Junior Men (M-10 to -14)
- Junior Women (W-10 to -14)
Eligibility
The competition is open to O.A.W.A. members only.
OY Events
Points for the competition may be gained at eight nominated OY events each season. These events will be the Long State Championships, the Middle Distance State Championships, the two Badge events, Day 2 of the Autumn Classic and three nominated Standard events.
Scoring
The winner of each category is the highest points scorer in the category after the last OY event of the season.
All events carry equal weighting, except that if there is a tie for winner, the points from the Long State Championships shall determine the outcome, followed if necessary by the points from the Middle distance State Championships.
Five events can be counted towards each competitor's total score, event scores being added together to give final scores.
Ranking tables for each category (Senior Men, Senior Women, Junior Men and Junior Women) are established after each event, based on the corrected kilometre rate of each competitor.
Positions at each event are determined by rates per kilometre, multiplied by age class adjustment factors (see below). Competitors in each category are then ranked according to their adjusted kilometre rates.
Ranking tables for each event are of the following sizes:
| Senior Men |
Senior Women |
Junior Men |
Junior Women |
| 40 |
25 |
20 |
15 |
Points are allocated to ranked competitors at each event within each category. Scores are allocated according to position on the ranking table for their category; 100 for the highest.

Organiser's Allowance
Persons who could not complete in an OY event because they were involved in its organisation may claim an organiser's allowance. They will have added to their OY score at the end of the season a points value equal to the average of their best four scores. This applies only to the Controller, Course Setter, Assistant Course Setter(s) and the Administrator at the event. Up to two organiser's allowances are allowed for any competitor per season.
Cancellation of Courses
If a course is cancelled, the competitors on that course will be allocated an average similar to the organiser's allowance, and the results of competitors on other courses treated as normal. A competitor may be allocated a course cancellation average as well as organiser's allowances within the same season.
