Enter On the Day procedures for pre-entry or interclub events

OAWA is eager to provide a positive experience for anybody who decides to try orienteering so visitors should be accommodated even if the main event of the day is not suitable for their direct participation. These guidelines are intended to cater for novice, non-member orienteers.

General

A helper should be assigned the task of handling enter on the day (EOD) participants. That person may be able to help with other administrative duties but should be able to leave them to assist EOD participants. Generally only a few people  would be expected unless the event has been specifically promoted to the public.

EODs will not be permitted to start until after all official competitors. Anyone inviting friends to attend should make it clear that starts for them will only be available for a short time.

Simple instructions on the procedure for EODs should be displayed and admin' cards used as usual.

EOD results should be displayed in the same place as the main event results but be kept distinct.

Badge Events

Master maps of the courses available for EOD (generally VE, E, M  and two H courses) should be provided to the EOD co-ordinator. After the last official start these maps should be displayed near the caravan where participants may copy the courses after registration, get instruction from the co-ordinator if required and proceed to the pre-start where they will be given a start time.

A strict time limit should be applied to these starts and this should be part of the display information. The course close time should also be made clear.

EODs will use the same finish procedure as official competitors.

Score Events and Relays

If the event is a score type event, such as  the teams event, at least one line course, using the easier controls, should be nominated by the setters. Do Not allow novices to make up their own course or try to find Hard grade controls.

For the relays, courses appropriate to the experience of the participant can be used. If spare premarked maps are available these can be used for EODs, otherwise they must  copy from master maps, without revealing them to Relay competitors.

In these events the EOD co-ordinator is responsible for starting the competitors. If the start triangle is away from the assembly area, EODs can be timed from the assembly area so that the co-ordinator is available for instruction of others.
