Bengtsson Offrell (B.O.) Trophy

Rules

OAWA Council first adopted these in 1999 after extensive discussion. It was considered important that all age classes have a chance to contribute, however “A” classes should contribute more than “B” or “C” classes.

Other major considerations were:

  • The differing sizes of the five Clubs.
  • The differing sizes of the classes.
  • The time involved in complex calculations of results.

Seven events contribute(d) to the B.O. Trophy score with each event having equal weight:

Long State Championships

Badge event 1

Badge event 2

Middle Distance State Championships

Inter-club Relays

Inter-club Teams

State Sprint Championships

The Interclub Teams and Relays each have their own systems of calculation of individual and Club results. The winning club is allocated 5 B.O. points, the second 4 etc.

Ffor each of the other events the total points for each Club are then divided by the number of that Club’s members who competed at least once in a Badge event or the State Championships during the previous year.

The Club with the highest resulting score is awarded 5 B.O. points, the second 4 etc.

In the event of a tie the Clubs share the B.O. points e.g. two Clubs tieing for first position both get 5 B.O. points.

B.O. Trophy Score

The total points from the seven events for each Club determines the winner of the Trophy.

If there is a tie for the highest number of B.O. points, only the points from the Badge and State Championships are used to decide the winning Club.

The scoring Rules are reviewed annually by the OAWA Technical Committee and applied by the B.O. Statistician.

For 2008 the Statistician is Dan Greig.

Origins of the Bengtsson Offrell (B.O.) Trophy

The Bengtsson Offrell (B.O.) Trophy was donated by the Bibbulmun Orienteering club in 1982 as a perpetual trophy for the champion club in the O.A.W.A.

The trophy is named after Per-Olof Bengtsson and Roland Offrell, two Swedish coaches who first visited Western Australia in 1975 to conduct coaching clinics for orienteers, physical education students, teachers and youth leaders. Their visit was sponsored by the Swedish Orienteering Federation (SOFT), the OFA and the Department of Sport and Recreation of WA.

Below is listed the biodata of the visitors which was published at the time of their visit in April 1975.

Per-Olof Bengtsson (1938-08-18)

  • First visit to Australia.
  • A member of the Swedish National O. team during the years 1961-1971.
  • Has been an O. since 1949.
  • By profession, an artillery officer with the rank of Major.
  • Has organised about 25 O. tours to different countries in Europe.
  • Per-Olaf has drawn (i.e. field work, re-drawn) maps for competitive use in Sweden, West Germany and Argintina.
  • He was course-setter of the Military World Championships in 1972 and the (University) Student W.C. in 1974.

Roland Offrell (1942-02-27)

  • Second visit to Australia, (previously November 1972 - January 1973) (Sole Instructor).
  • One of Sweden's Orienteers and expert course planner/map reader.
  • As a result of his previous 3 months visit to Australia significantly, improved the quality of Australian O-maps. Introduced the technique skills of field work, map cartography (re-drawing) and preparing for 4 colour maps.
  • Roland has a degree in forestry.
  • He was a member of the Swedish Orienteering team in the World Championships, has planned and organised a 5 day "O-ringen" event in Sweden (an Annual O. Carnival, where more than 10,000 Orienteers take part), and was assistant coach of the 1972 Swedish team in Czechoslavakia (World Championships).
  • Coached the Australian team (40) in Sweden prior to the July 1975 O-ringen.
  • Member of the I.O.F. Coaching and Publicity Committee.

Since that inaugural visit, which gave a great fillip to orienteering in this State, Per-Olaf has continued to travel the world with organised O-tours.

Roland returned to W.A. with his wife in 1979 to conduct a further coaching course. He has several times been coach of the Australian team at World Championship carnivals.
