TITLE: MENTAL PREPARATION FOR
COMPETITION - A SYSTEM FOR SUCCESS (0082)
A series of articles on
aspects of preparing for a major competition in the seven days leading up to
the event. The first article is a case
study of a heptathlete preparing for the Seoul Olympics. The techniques she used show that training
one's mental skills should be carried on in conjunction with physical training,
rather than being left to the last minute.
The second article, The physiological basis of tapering before a
competition, concludes that a reduction in training load, if properly
carried in conjunction with appropriate nutrition, can benefit the
athlete. Fluid and fuel to optimise performance discusses the importance of
correct nutrition and fluid intake. Peaking the team discusses long- and
short-term strategies for bringing a team to peak performance. The
final week gives the views of selected coaches and athletes on tapering
training in the seven days before a competition.
